Take the Mystery Out of Experiencing Art

Attending art exhibits, events and festivals can be intimidating. How do you judge art works objectively? Why do artists choose certain colors, textures and media? How do you approach the artist to discuss his or her work?

Lone Star College-Kingwood offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in the art gallery experience through classroom activities and a visit to a Lone Star College-Kingwood Art Gallery opening in a class called ‘Meet the Artist' that will meet on Tuesdays, May 2 through 26 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

"It's a chance for participants to be exposed to various styles of contemporary art, meet an artist and have fun doing a hands-on technique," said artist and instructor Lisa Qualls. "My goal is to demystify art."

As part of the class, participants will meet LSC-Kingwood art instructor Mari Omori at her Gallery opening on May 19.

Qualls received her BFA at the University of Texas at Austin. While teaching art in the classroom she has continued to study photography, ceramics, textiles and printmaking at Santa Chiara, Italy; Parsons and The Fashion Institute of Technology, New York; and the Southwest School of Art and Craft, San Antonio.

Space is limited so students are encouraged to register as early as possible and students must enroll before the first class meets. The cost for the class is $39 or $32.60 for senior citizens.

Registering for continuing education classes is easy. Students can register by telephone at 281-312-1660 or 281-312-1661. Students can also register online at Kingwood.LoneStar.edu or in person in CLA Room 107.

Online and telephone registration for May mini-term, summer and fall terms is going on now at Kingwood.LoneStar.edu/registration or 281-591-6625.  On-site registration is available during regular office hours.  New students attending for the first time from other colleges or universities must have an official college transcript sent to Lone Star College-Kingwood prior to registration and should also complete the online admissions application at www.lonestar.edu/apply.
