General Information
Group and private lessons are available on most instruments and voice. Private lessons are reserved for students who are already at a fairly advanced level on their instrument/voice. Group lessons are designed for students who are just starting out or who have played their instrument for some time but have limited skills reading music. If you have questions about which setting is right for you, contact a member of the music faculty at your college using our Music Department contact page.
Private Lessons (MUAP)
Students taking private lessons are usually music majors or non-music majors who are involved in music department ensembles such as band or choir. To register for private lessons, you must have permission from the Music Department at your college, who will make sure you are at a high enough level to be able to complete the course succesfully before giving you permission to register. In addition to the lessons themselves, students in MUAP courses participate in solo recital performances and a juried performance before the music department at the end of each semester. (Students must also be registered for one MUEN or MUSI course to take MUAP Private Lessons.)
Music majors must take four semesters of 2-credit hour private lessons (MUAP 12xx) for their degree. Non-music majors register for 1-credit hour private lessons (MUAP 11xx).
The MUAP course number varies by instrument/voice. Use the class search tool to find the correct MUAP course for your instrument/voice.
Group Lessons (MUSI):
Group lessons are available for beginning/intermediate students in piano, voice and guitar. These courses are open to all students, without permission of the music department. You may register directly for them online or in person.
