The COVID-19 crisis has disrupted the lives of many people throughout the world. Sudden changes to our daily routines and livelihood may lead some people to feel anxious, fearful and/or stressed. These feelings are completely normal! However, how we respond to these feelings can positively or negatively impact our lives. 

Lone Star College-Tomball wants to encourage everyone to take care of their emotional and mental well-being during the COVID-19 crisis. We believe positive self-care is important to achieving your educational goals. Below are a list of Self-Care Tips and resources to support your emotional and mental well-being during this time.

Stress Management

Get the Facts! Stay informed with the latest health and campus information from these reputable sources:

Managing stress can be aided by being mindful about certain parts of your day that you might otherwise take for granted. Being mindful in your actions is key.

  • Keep Busy! Try to develop a routine like your normal day. This may include scheduling time to complete work and school responsibilities, prepare and eating meals and household chores.
  • Take a News Break! Constant exposure to unsettling news on the tv and social media can cause anxiety and stress. Try to limit the amount of time you expose yourself to news about the COVID-19.
  • Don’t dismiss your feelings! Acknowledging that you are stressed is the first step towards dealing with it. Learn the Signs and Symptoms of Stress and additional coping strategies.
  • Be Prepared! Take practical steps to protect you and your family. Learn more tips here: CDC Preparedness
  • Make healthy choices: Good self-care includes healthy eating, regular exercise and getting adequate sleep. Try to avoid excessive use of alcohol and other unhealthy substances. Maintain a healthy routine using some of the tips and resources below::

Stay Connected

  • Use social media, email, phone calls and video tools to stay connected with family and friends. Some common video tools are Skype, Facetime, Google Hangouts, and WhatsApp.
  • Call a friend if you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed.
  • Take time out of your day to check on others who may need emotional support during this time.
  • Host a Netflix Party! Netflix subscribers can link up with family and friends and host a long distance movie night.

Relaxation

Engage in healthy activities to help you relax. Rereading your favorite book, taking a quick walk around the neighborhood, stretching, taking a hot bubble bath or shower and coloring are some examples of easy ways to help you relax. According to Psychology Today, gratitude is an emotion expressing appreciation for what one has. Developing an “attitude of gratitude” is consistently associated with positive emotional and physical well-being. Choosing to live a life of gratitude can help you cope with difficult times and hardships.

Gratitude is a choice! People who routinely practice gratitude tend to be happier and healthier.
