This degree is designed to serve two broad purposes. It provides a degree to enhance the qualifications of candidates wishing to teach on the secondary and junior college levels, or who wish to cultivate analytical language, reading, and research skills that may lead to careers in various professional and business areas. It provides a strong background for candidates proceeding beyond the masters to the Ph.D. The English graduate curriculum is organized into 5 blocks containing 12 areas of study, including seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth century literature.
