Assistive technology is defined by the Assistive Technology Act of 2004 as "any item, piece of equipment, or system, whether acquired commercially, modified, or customized, that is commonly used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities" (29 U.S.C. Sec 2202(2)). AT devices and services are made available to students with disabilities to facilitate equal access to educational programming and services. LSCS values the use of technology to support the advancement of each student's career and academic goals and seeks to expand access for all students through acquistion of new and emerging technologies.
Each college campus has an Assistive Technology Lab. Access to AT Lab services and equipment is determined on an individual basis through the review of a student's disability documentation by the campus' Disability Services Counselor/Manager. If assistive technology is deemed appropriate, the student may be referred to the Assistive Technology Lab Coordinator for demonstration and instruction on the usage of the recommended technology.
