The Learning Garden is more than a site for gardening. It is a place to demonstrate renewable, alternate energy generation by solar, wind and hydro mechanical sources
A 175 watt solar panel, donated by BP Solar, and installed with a grant from Entergy provides 24 volt, DC power to the Learning Garden. Lights in the Learning Garden and shed and a water pump for the waterwheel are run by energy from the solar power system.
A mini grant was used to purchase and install a working windmill and waterwheel. The water well was hand bored by the geology students into a sand lens that produced water. The waterwheel is run by water from the windmill and produces electricity for a small LED light. A 24v DC pump recycles water to run the waterwheel when there is no water produced from the well.
