Earn a teaching certificate through ATCP

Earn a teaching certificate through ATCPAs student growth continues in area school districts, teachers who are skilled, qualified, and caring are currently in demand.

Lone Star College’s Alternative Teacher Certification (ATC) Program is available to help people, with a bachelor’s degree and passion for making a difference in the lives of young people, become educators. LSC-Kingwood will hold fall information sessions at 5 p.m. on Sept. 10, Oct. 8 and Nov. 12. Due to Hurricane Harvey, the sessions will take place in the Community Education (CMED) Building room 204 at LSC-North Harris. The campus location is 2700 W.W. Thorne Drive.

“The Lone Star College’s ATC Program is well respected by the school districts in the greater Houston area for the quality of alternative certified teachers we produce,” said Jennifer Leadbetter, ATC program director at LSC-Kingwood.

The ATC Program has partnerships with more than 45 school districts, 50 certification areas, flexible course schedules and a choice between two routes to certification: internship or clinical teaching. In addition, Lone Star College’s ATC Program has recently partnered with classroom management experts at EPIC Decisions in providing individualized and targeted instruction on behavioral decision-making in the classroom. Also, this program offers EPIC decision-making coaches to students during their internship experience, which supports the development and implementation of effective behavioral strategies for all students.

“This unique training allows ATC Program students to develop a personalized classroom management identity to increase effectiveness with student behavior,” Leadbetter said.

To earn their ATC certification, students must complete a minimum of 300 hours of coursework, field experience, and training. All courses will adequately prepare the student in the art of teaching for his or her content area, specific to the domains and competencies of Texas Education Agency (TEA). New regulations from TEA requires ATC candidates to have their content exam passed and at least 180 of the 300 hours of coursework completed before they may begin an internship or clinical teaching. Now is a great time to start.
