TSI and TSI-A: Background

Instituted by the Texas Legislature, the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a program that includes diagnostic testing and developmental instruction in order to improve college student success rates in Texas.  The Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSI-A) is the particular test used, and is designed to assess students’ college readiness in reading, writing, and math while also providing remediation feedback to improve these skills for students not considered ready for college-level coursework.  The test is online and contains questions aligned to the Texas College and Career Readiness Standards.  Based on how students perform on the TSI-A, they may be enrolled in coursework that aligns with their skills, or be placed in an appropriate developmental course/intervention to improve their skills.

Testing for Lone Star College?

Steps towards Testing

1. Apply

Apply - Ensure that you have applied to the college and received a student ID number.  This can be done at http://www.lonestar.edu/admissions.htm

2. Advisor Meeting

Take any testing history (previous SAT, ACT, TAKS, PSAT/NMSQT, high school end of course scores, etc.) or transcripts to an advisor to determine if you are exempt from taking any portions of the TSI-A. They will issue you a Testing Referral that will authorize you to take the specified sections of the TSI-A. Advisors are located on the 1st floor of the Student Conference Center behind the Student Services Front Desk.

3. Payment

Only after receiving a referral from an advisor, pay the Cashier on the 1st floor of the Student Conference Center. Tell them how many sections of the TSI-A you were referred to take by an advisor or how much your advisor instructed you to pay, and you will be charged accordingly. On the day you decide to test, provide your receipt to the Testing Center staff as proof of payment.

4. Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA)

This state of Texas mandated activity must be completed in your myLoneStar account PRIOR to arriving for testing. See instructions on how to navigate through the activity. Remember to hit the “Continue” button at the end of the activity so your completion is documented.  Otherwise, you will be asked to complete the PAA again. If you have trouble accessing the PAA via myLoneStar, call the Office of Technology Services (OTS) at 832-813-6600 or visit them on the ground floor of Classroom Building A (CLA).

5. Arrive

Arrive at the Testing Center with your receipt, Testing Referral, and a valid photo ID.  Such testing is done on a walk-in basis, but you should arrive no later than 2 hours prior to closing.

Details About the TSI-A

  1. All prescribed sections must be completed within 2 weeks of the start date to avoid paying for any uncompleted sections
  2. TSI-A is untimed
  3. Typed Essay should be completed in ONE SITTING
  4. Essay may take one-two days to be scored; all other results arrive immediately
  5. No personal calculators are permitted; a built-in calculator will appear on questions where its use is allowed
