Waller Equine Hospital 

Position: Waller Equine Hospital has a full time technician/assistant swing shift job opening. We are located in Waller, TX northwest of Houston. We have small town living with the convenience of the big city within 30 minutes. The practice employs 25 staff members including, two equine surgeons, three general practitioners, and three LVT’s. The equine facilities include a 20 stall barn, equine isolation unit, 12 paddocks, and 2 pastures. The technician/assistant we will employ will be self-motivated, team player, detail oriented, with a willingness to learn new tasks. Responsibilities will include receiving emergencys, patient monitoring, patient care, intravenous injections, fluid therapy, cleaning the surgery suite/recovery stalls/exam with a power washer, cleaning the front office, and instrument sterilization.
The position offers an opportunity with diagnostic equipment such as digital radiography, video endoscopy, blood gas analysis, complete blood cell counts, biochemical profiles, etc. Benefits will include 401k, paid continuing education (if you are licensed), 10 days paid vacation, 6 days sick leave, group health insurance plan, and competitive wages based on experience.

Position:  Manor Equine Hospital seeks a full-time anesthesia/surgery technician to join our well-established, premier equine referral center serving Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Northern Virginia.  We are a dedicated team who has developed a reputation for excellent patient care and superior communication.

This technician will work closely with the surgeons and our other veterinarians and technicians in managing our surgical patients during their clinical workup, and in the peri-anesthetic and post-operative period.  Responsibilities will include patient prep and imaging, catheter placement, providing sedation and induction and monitoring of anesthesia, monitoring throughout the peri-anesthetic period, daily patient care and treatments, and record keeping.  This person will also assist with anesthesia inventory, equipment maintenance and cleanliness/organization of anesthesia areas.

Eligibility for licensure in Maryland and experience with handling/restraining horses is required. Administering IV/IM injections, placement of IV catheters, administering anesthesia and assessing patient monitoring, intubation, and anesthesia recovery in equine patients is highly desirable, although we are willing to train the right candidate.  A working knowledge of basic pharmacology and physiology, anesthesia equipment, patient monitors, ability to address changes in patient status under anesthesia and during recovery, and calculate drug dosages and rates is also highly preferred.

General Description |
This position serves as a Technician I in the Histopathology Section, a fast paced, high volume laboratory that prepares an average of 330 slides a day for microscopic examination. This is not a research position, but a role that allows employees to become part of a team that works to diagnose diseases, conditions, and abnormalities in both live and deceased livestock, poultry, and companion animals.
Key responsibilities include trimming samples of formalin-fixed animal tissue for automated processing; embedding processed tissues in paraffin; microtoming sections; and staining and coverslipping slides. This role requires performance of routine, repetitive tasks with considerable technical supervision and the ability to troubleshoot routine procedures.
Responsibilities Sample Prep, Sample Cataloging | Retrieve samples, visually analyze samples for quality, order appropriate tests in TVMDL’s computer based laboratory information management system (LIMS). File and/or catalog specimens, slides, paraffin blocks, or other diagnostic material for archival purposes.
Testing | Review submittal forms and interpret test requests/client instructions. Visually analyze samples and record notes on each, indicating observations, measurements, diagrams, and/or descriptions of each tissue. Ensure documentation meets quality assurance requirements.
Trim tissues for automated processing, embed tissues in paraffin, use a microtome to cut thin sections, adhere sections to slides, and prepare slides for staining techniques. May perform special staining techniques. Prepare samples for national and state regulatory disease monitoring programs. Use automated immunohistochemistry staining system for prion specimens.
Client Communication | Communicate with clients via phone or in writing to clarify test requests, discuss basic testing capabilities, and verify sample details or patient history. Ensure confidentiality of correspondence and reports.
Quality Assurance & Safety | Adhere and conform to quality assurance and safety programs and procedures. Assist in identifying incidents of nonconformance and noncompliance. Actively participate in quality assurance and safety programs. Perform trainings and testing within established turnaround times. Responsible for safe handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals when relevant. Successfully complete proficiency tests as assigned.
Supplies, Stock, Inventory, and Equipment | Catalog incoming supplies and stock inventory. Inform management when supply inventory is low, inadequate, or expired. Perform routine lab equipment maintenance such as replacing filters, replacing coverslip film, replacing and adding reagents such as alcohols, xylene, acids, buffers, and dyes in various automated machines, and lubricating microtomes. Maintain clean work areas by removing paraffin buildup, cleaning stainless steel equipment, and recycling empty jars, cardboard boxes, and paper.
Administrative Roles | Complete and file electronic paperwork in a timely manner, including worksheets, forms, accession forms, regulatory forms, quality assurance and safety documentation, equipment maintenance forms, and logbooks. Abide by agency and state records retention and confidentiality requirements.
May perform result entry and assist with routing regulatory paperwork for state and national animal health disease monitoring programs during peak testing.
Teamwork & Cooperation | Work with colleagues in other testing sections and laboratories to coordinate testing for shared samples. Assist in training fellow technicians as needed. Foster laboratory teamwork, cooperation, professional standards, and communications. Participate in cross training with fellow technicians. Provide backup to fellow technicians in case of absences. Other job-related duties as assigned.

General Description | This position serves as a Diagnostic Technician in the Serology Section, a high volume laboratory that conducts over 450 diagnostic tests daily on animal samples submitted by veterinarians and animal owners. This is not a research position, but a role that will allow the employee to perform serologic testing on thousands of diagnostic samples from both livestock and companion animals. 
Key responsibilities include conducting laboratory testing on animal serum and tissue samples, recording results, and reporting findings for a series of closely-controlled benchtop diagnostic assays. This role requires performance of routine, repetitive tasks and the ability to troubleshoot routine procedures with considerable supervision.
Responsibilities
Sample Prep, Sample Cataloging | Retrieve samples and enter case data into TVMDL’s computer-based laboratory information management system (LIMS). Review submittal forms and interpret test requests/client instructions. Trim fresh lymph node and obex (brain) tissues in preparation for testing. May file and/or catalog specimens or other diagnostic material for archival purposes.
Testing | Visually analyze samples for quality and perform serological tests following standard procedures using pipettes, centrifuges, microplate readers, and other scientific apparatus. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), complement fixation (CF), agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID), and indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) are the primary testing methodologies. Successfully complete proficiency tests for assigned assays.
Data Entry, Interpretation, Results | Prepare test worklists and worksheets. Read, compute, and record observations, results, and measurements into LIMS. Ensure documentation for all tests meets quality assurance requirements.
Client Communication | Communicate with clients via phone or in writing to clarify test requests, discuss testing capabilities, and verify sample details or patient history. Ensure confidentiality of correspondence and reports. Quality Assurance & Safety | Adhere and conform to quality assurance, safety programs, and procedures. Ensure documentation for all testing meets quality assurance standards. Perform trainings and testing within established turnaround times. Responsible for safe handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals.
SOPs, Procedures, Forms, Other Documentation | Read, interpret, and perform all tests in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs). Review and recommend changes or improvements to section SOPs, forms or other documentation related to section protocols. Generate forms and test documentation and file according to SOPs.
Supplies, Stock, Inventory, Equipment | Catalog incoming supplies and stock inventory. Inform management when supply inventory is low, inadequate, or expired. Verify instrument accuracy by running known control samples and analyzing control data. Perform and document calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment as trained.
Administrative Duties | May perform transcription/data entry duties as needed. File electronic paperwork in a timely manner, including worksheets, forms, accession forms, regulatory forms, quality assurance and safety documentation, equipment maintenance forms, and logbooks. Abide by agency and state records retention and confidentiality requirements.
Teamwork & Cooperation | Work with colleagues in other testing sections and laboratories to coordinate testing for shared samples. Assist in training technicians as needed. Foster laboratory teamwork, cooperation, professional standards, and communications. Participate in cross training with fellow technicians. Provide backup to fellow technicians in case of absences.  Other job-related duties as assigned.
Other | Work shall be performed with adherence to federal, state, Texas A&M University System, and TVMDL safety rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Perform work in such a way as to not expose others or myself to hazards that are avoidable by reasonable and approved methods.
Required: 
Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience. Five years of related experience.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge of laboratory equipment, scientific apparatus, and computer equipment. Ensure attention to detail. Able to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred:
Education and Experience: Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in biomedical science, animal science, biology, or related field. Veterinary medicine/human medicine/clinical or other laboratory experience.
Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations: Certificate or license in a veterinary, medical, biological or related field (e.g. LVT, MLT/MLS, biotechnology ATC).
Knowledge of :Basic scientific/veterinary/medical terminology.
Skilled in :Performing repetitive tasks efficiently and accurately; use of basic laboratory equipment (i.e. centrifuge, pipettors, plate readers, timers) and computer equipment.
Able to: Ensure attention to detail; work well in a team; constructively communicate with colleagues and clients; prioritize tasks and manage competing responsibilities; and meet deadlines.
