Rodeo Awards Vocational Scholarships

Process Technology in Oil

For the second year in a row, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo awarded Lone Star College $22,000 in scholarships. Scholarships will go to students pursuing vocations in technical fields such as Process Technology, Oil and Gas Floorhand and Industrial Diesel Technology. Matthew Lemons, an Industrial Diesel Technology student won one of this year's scholarships. "Class was interrupted mid-lecture by the lead instructors for the program and I was called outside the room to be told I was the winner. It was completely unexpected!" he said. Lemon's dream job is to work for Amtrak or Union Pacific.

HLSR's Technical College Scholarship supports "non-traditional students in their pursuit of an associate degree or certificate in an approved technical field" according to Amy Moroney, Executive Director-Educational Programs. Lone Star College supports our growing community by offering Workforce Certificates, Associates degrees, and professional development through Corporate College. Students train for jobs that keep our economy strong.

With scholarships covering tuition, books and tools, students can focus on completing their degree or certificate. One of last year's scholarship recipients, Joe Tschetter, is completing his AAS degree in Construction Supervision before pursuing a bachelor's degree. "This scholarship made my life easier because I have a limited income and was able to still complete my classes," he said.

In addition to technical scholarships, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is also an endowment donor with scholarships going to Veterinary Technology students at LSC-Tomball.
