At Lone Star College-Houston North, HyFlex courses are designed to provide flexibility while maintaining meaningful interaction, active learning and a strong connection between students and instructors.
What Is HyFlex Learning?
HyFlex—short for Hybrid-Flexible—gives students greater choice in how they participate in their courses. Students can engage through in-person and online learning modalities while accessing the same course, instructor, learning objectives and academic experience.
Depending on the course design, students may have opportunities to participate synchronously online, attend in person, and/or complete learning activities asynchronously.
The goal isn't simply to give students more ways to attend class, it's to intentionally design a learning experience that supports student success across modalities, and supports students when they need it the most.
Why HyFlex?
Students have different responsibilities, schedules, transportation needs and learning preferences. HyFlex can help students stay engaged in their education when circumstances make attending class in person difficult.
HyFlex can provide:
- Greater flexibility and access
- More options for participating in class
- Continued access to instructors and classmates
- Opportunities to learn in different environments
- A learning experience designed around active participation

What's the difference between Hybrid and HyFlex?
Hybrid courses combine in-person and online learning according to a set course schedule. HyFlex courses offer greater flexibility by giving students options for how they participate, while maintaining the same course, instructor and learning objectives across modalities.
Hybrid = a set schedule of in-person + online learning. The course determines when students attend in person and when they participate online. For example, students might meet on campus Mondays and complete online work Wednesdays.
HyFlex = flexible choice in how you participate. The student has more choice in how they participate. Depending on the course design, students may attend in person, participate synchronously online, or complete designated asynchronous activities.
Is HyFlex Right for You?
HyFlex courses can be especially helpful for students balancing college with work, family responsibilities or other commitments.
For example, a student who travels for work may be able to participate remotely when away from campus. A student with limited transportation may participate online. Another student may prefer the interaction of an in-person classroom while having online options available when needed.
HyFlex provides choice without isolation—students can have flexibility while still being part of a learning community.
