Kenia Mojarro Mejia dreamed of being the first in her family to go to college – and now she has a $15,000 scholarship to help her reach that goal.

Kenia Mojarro Mejia was one of three people awarded the “Tu Camino” scholarship earlier this month during a surprise ceremony on the LSC-University Park campus.

Mejia was born in Mexico and came to the U.S. when she was three years old.

“I actually remember being in my PreK class and hearing everybody speaking English and me not knowing anything that they were saying. But, as anything in my life, I figured it out and I kept going. I’ve had a lot of great mentors and a lot of great opportunities to get where I’m at now.”

She says going to college is a goal she has always wanted to achieve.

“I’ve always wanted to go to Lone Star. As far as being the first person to go to college, it’s just amazing to me. I’m very much committed to going to school.”

The scholarship was sponsored by Univision, Lone Star College and the LSC Foundation.

Applicants were asked to write an essay answering the question, “How a Lone Star College Scholarship will help me attain greater education or certification that will enhance my career path or pursue a career shift.”

Mejia says she’s considered Lone Star College before, but always held back due to financial constraints. Now, thanks to this scholarship, she’ll be able to work toward her goal of obtaining a degree in Healthcare/Business Administration.

LSC-Kingwood President Dr. Melissa Gonzalez congratulated Mejia on the accomplishment.

“It is an honor to see such a deserving student receive this scholarship. We know this will help her achieve success here at LSC-Kingwood and we look forward to supporting her on that journey.”

“This feels amazing,” Mejia shared. “I’m just so happy that I was able to be a part of this opportunity. It makes me so excited. I’m very proud of myself and my family is very proud of me as well.”

Nearly 200 people submitted essays for the contest. The money will go toward tuition and fees.
