We spotlight Laurye Lewis, a student from our Lone Star College Transportation and Global Logistics Technology Center who recently earned her Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Family has always played a significant role in Lewis’ life. Growing up in a family of six, there was never a dull moment. Lewis’ mother, Deneia Nolbert, was the greatest influence, having earned her CDL in 2008, she encouraged Lewis to do the same.

“I’ve always admired the way she carried herself with grace, strength, and quiet confidence,” Lewis mused. “She never hesitated to step out of her comfort zone or try something new. Watching her constantly push herself to learn and grow, no matter her stage in life, it left a deep impression on me.”

After graduating from Dekaney High School in 2020, Lewis originally chose to pursue a career as an esthetician. Pursuing her education in this field, Lewis found the experience engaging, developing hands-on skills in skincare and wellness. As much as she enjoyed exploring her passion for beauty and selfcare, Lewis found herself wanting something more.

“What influenced me to become a Class A truck driver was my desire to travel and see more of the country,” Lewis shared. “I love the idea of having that kind of freedom that comes with being on the road. It gives me the chance to grow on a personal level, learning how to be independent, responsible, and self-reliant. Plus, seeing both my mother and sister’s success after they earned their CDL inspired me to start my own path through LSC.”

Lewis enrolled at the LSC-Transportation and Global Logistics Technology Center and began her training on April 2 and completed it on May 15. She has said that the experience has given her valuable insights and education to support and strengthen her foundation in her chosen field. Most importantly, it gives Lewis the opportunity to provide for herself and her two-year-old daughter, Kaedyn.

“What I love most about Lone Star College is the people,” Lewis said. “From the staff to my classmates, everyone made the experience genuinely fun and enjoyable. You can tell the instructors and team really love what they do. Everyone brings so much energy and humor into the classroom. There was laughter, support, and a sense of community. We all built a bond that made learning feel less like a task and more like something we were all excited to do together.”
