The LSC-Kingwood Music Department will join more than 180 singers from the greater Lake Houston community for an epic mass performance of Mendelssohn’s Elijah.
This special performance brings together singers from the Kingwood Chorale, the Kingwood High School Chorale, and the Lone Star College–Kingwood Concert Choir. They will be accompanied by a 37-piece chamber orchestra made up of professional musicians from the Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet orchestras, along with professional soloists from Southeast Texas.
The musical dramatically depicts the trials and triumphs of the famous Old Testament prophet. Sung in English, Elijah premiered in England in 1846 and has been a popular staple of orchestras and choral societies ever since. Elijah is considered one of Mendelssohn’s greatest achievements, blending dramatic storytelling with soaring choruses and intimate solo moments.
“To my knowledge, Elijah has never been performed in the Lake Houston area, and we are all excited it is finally happening,” said professor of music and conductor Dr. Todd Miller. “We have great cooperation from KHS choral director Jason Watt, and his students are outstanding! I am also thrilled that our college students will be able to experience epic work like this at our two-year institution. It is a rarity indeed.”
Bass-baritone Timothy Jones, professor of voice at the University of Houston Moores School of Music, will portray the title role of Elijah.
Performances will take place on Saturday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 12 at 2:30 p.m., at Kingwood High School Auditorium, 2701 Kingwood Drive, Kingwood, TX, 77339.
