The American Student Government Association (ASGA) spotlights Lone Star College-CyFair’s Student Life Director Dan Mitsven as SG Advisor of the Month for July.
This honor is one of ASGA’s premier national awards recognizing exceptional Student Governments, Presidents and Advisors monthly in celebration of those making a real difference on their campuses.
“It’s nice to be recognized for years of service as an advisor,” said Mitsven, LSC-CyFair’s SGA Advisor since 2018. “Student involvement has always been something I’ve been passionate about and that I believe in as a key component to student success.”
The majority of Mitsven’s 33-year career in Student Life has included working with students to learn skills that will help make them better leaders and professionals. For the last 21 years he’s served as SGA Advisor - 13 years at LSC-North Harris and the past 8 years at LSC-CyFair.
“Advising student groups is a challenging role that requires lots of time, energy and patience, but it’s a rewarding role when you see student leaders accomplish their goals,” said Mitsven.
One memorable successful SGA initiative Mitsven said he’s proud of is the Red Carpet Gala, a semi-formal event with dancing and catering. The first SGA officer team post-Covid, under the leadership of then President Judy Pham, observed many students did not have an opportunity to attend a high school prom. Hosted in partnership with the Student Activities Board, this event drew more than 200 students and their guests.
“This was a great example of SGA officers being in tune with the needs and interests of the student body, then taking action to address the needs,” he said.
As advisor of LSC-CyFair’s SGA, which serves as the voice of the student body - now at 25,000 students - with college administrators, Mitsven said “My goal for our SGA officer team is to identify at least one primary issue or cause annually to pursue that helps to affect change and make the college better for all students.”
