For Lone Star College–North Harris student Gloria Villa, the road to graduation was not a straight path, but one shaped by resilience, family sacrifice and determination.

Born and raised in Houston, Villa said growing up in a diverse and close-knit Hispanic household taught her the importance of hard work, culture and community. As the youngest of four siblings, she credits much of her strength and perseverance to her mother, who raised four children on her own while overcoming significant challenges.

“My mom has always been my best friend, my biggest supporter, and the person who motivated me to keep pursuing my education even when I wanted to give up,” Villa said. Villa’s educational journey took an unexpected turn when she stepped away from a four-year university to help care for her mother as her health declined. During that time, Villa balanced family responsibilities while trying to navigate the uncertainty of putting her education on hold. She later returned to school through LSC–North Harris, where she said she rebuilt her confidence academically and personally. As a first-generation college student, Villa learned to navigate higher education while balancing work, school, and responsibilities at home.

“Looking back now, that chapter of my life shaped me into someone who values perseverance, education, and community,” Villa said. “It showed me that setbacks do not define a person, what matters is finding the strength to keep moving forward.” Villa said her experiences inspired her to pursue a career focused on advocacy and service to under-served communities. She credits professors Maria Donaire-Cirsovius and Jon R. Wilson for helping to guide and encourage her during difficult moments in her academic journey.

“Their mentorship reminded me that I belonged in higher education and that my story and experiences matter,” Villa said. During her time at LSC–North Harris, Villa overcame academic suspension, worked full time to support herself and continued pursuing her degree despite setbacks. Her determination led to recognition on the President’s List twice, membership in Phi Theta Kappa, and the National Society of Leadership and Success, and graduation with an Associate of Arts degree in History. She also earned a full-ride scholarship to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, where she plans to continue her education and pursue a career in law.

Villa said one of the biggest lessons she learned is that success does not always come easily or follow a straight line.

“Sometimes growth comes from overcoming obstacles, rebuilding yourself, and continuing forward despite challenges,” Villa said. She hopes her story will inspire younger students, especially first-generation Hispanic students, to believe their circumstances do not define their future.

“What I love most about attending Lone Star College-North Harris is the sense of community and support I found there,” Villa said. “LSC-North Harris became more than just a school to me, it became the place where I rebuilt myself, discovered my voice, and proved to myself that setbacks do not define who you become.”
