Feb. 27 Open House at LSC-Carver Center-College lifelong-learning program for older adults

Lifelong learning is widely recognized as an important factor in keeping a person’s mind active. As increasing numbers of older adults are enrolling in various forms of continuing education, Lone Star College-North Harris is expanding its Academy of Lifelong Learning (ALL) offerings to include classes at the LSC-Carver Center—located in the Acres Home community.

“The Acres Homes community has a very vibrant and active Senior Citizen population. Senior adults already attend classes at the Lincoln Park, Harris County Precinct 1 location, and at the local chamber of commerce,” says Carole Wiater, ALL program coordinator. “However, the college has been asked to bring additional leisure learning classes to the LSC-Carver Center campus to supplement what is being offered in the community. We are working with a local advisory group who will help us decided which classes the community would like. Many seniors don’t drive as far as they used to and prefer attending activities nearer their homes. The LSC-Carver Center is a perfect location with classrooms, which have the latest technologies.”
Lone Star College-North Harris’ ALL is a membership-based program, which provides free or low-cost, leisure learning classes and activities designed for Seniors 50+ years of age. An annual $20 membership is required to register for classes.  Most classes are free, but some may require small materials or event fees.

An open house is scheduled for, Saturday, Feb. 27, 9:30 to 11 a.m., in the Gallery at the LSC-Carver Center. A special presentation on “Consumer Awareness” will be given by a Better Business Bureau representative. LSC-North Harris ALL is also looking for class ideas and volunteers to teach them. The event is open to the public.  For more information, contact Carole Wiater at 281.765.7947 or visit: LoneStar.edu/all-nharris.htm.
