Lone Star College-CyFair’s Academic Success Center (ASC) offers a variety of free resources to help students succeed in their classes from tutoring to seminars to labs.
The fall semester Student Success Seminars include “Note Taking and Study Skills” Sept. 18, Sept. 24 and Sept. 26; “Time and Stress Management” Oct. 9, Oct. 22 and Oct. 24; and “Test Anxiety” Oct. 23, Nov. 14 and Nov. 19. The hour-long seminars are held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays, 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 2 p.m. Thursdays in the library, room 131.
Tutoring and peer mentoring programs are available to those who need a little extra help in subjects such as accounting, American Sign Language (ASL), AutoCAD, biology, business, chemistry, developmental math, economics, English, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), history, math, physics, psychology, reading and writing.
“We have seen that students who take advantage of the ASC resources show higher success rates of completing their courses than students who don’t visit the center. For example, in Math 306, 308, 310, 1314 and 1316, we saw a 10%-15% higher success rate,” said Dr. Rodrick Moore, director. “ASC users also say it’s a quiet place to do homework and reviews and a great place to get help right away as needed.”
The ASC offers workshops, test-based reviews and practice material to help with placement testing which determines a student’s current level of skills and knowledge in reading, writing and math.
“Thanks to excellent test review and guidance, I was able to pass the English test which enabled me to enroll in ENGL 1301 for Fall 2013 and thus resurrect my college studies,” said Gavin Anderson.
Byron Preadom, also ready to enroll in ENGL 1301 after his session, said “It was very helpful, especially for the essay portion. I was able to pass the reading, writing and essay sections with great scores.”
Students can also reserve time in general purpose labs, language labs (including digital online) and open labs.
