Lone Star College partners with University of St. Thomas to help students start close and go far

Lone Star College and the University of St. Thomas are teaming up to offer students an opportunity to start at LSC and then smoothly transfer to UST. LSC students interested in transferring to UST will now be able to meet with UST advisers on-site at the LSC-University Center at The Woodlands.

In addition, UST and LSC have completed five new Program-to-Program Articulation Agreements that will guide the students through the pathway at LSC and UST.

“We are very excited to offer Lone Star College students the opportunity to seamlessly transfer to the University of St. Thomas,” said Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC chancellor.

“This collaboration is a great example of our commitment to student success,” Head said. “Having UST advisers on hand is another important resource to help students complete their degree.”

The partnership was formalized during a signing ceremony which took place Thursday, Feb. 14, at LSC-University Center at The Woodlands.

“This alliance is a natural extension of the relationship built between these two institutions,” said Dr. Richard Ludwick, UST president. “We are happy the University of St. Thomas and Lone Star College have this special opportunity to serve students.”

Thanks to the new Program-to-Program Articulation Agreements, students can begin at LSC and then transfer to UST. These agreements align the courses required for students to earn the associate degree at LSC and the bachelor’s degree at UST, ensuring a seamless transfer. The agreement transfer guide identifies and helps minimize any courses that aren’t needed by the student to complete the bachelor’s degree at UST.

“Students can take the same path I took,” said Myriam Saldívar, LSC Board vice chair and former Lone Star College and University of St. Thomas student. “These two institutions share a rich history of high quality education.”

The Program-to-Program Articulation Agreements include:

•           Associate of Arts to Bachelor of Science, Nursing (BSN)

•           Associate of Arts to Bachelor of Arts, Mathematics

•           Associate of Science to Bachelor of Science, Chemistry

•           Associate of Science to Bachelor of Arts, Chemistry

•           Associate of Arts to Bachelor of Arts, Biology

Also representing LSC were: Mike Sullivan, LSC Board trustee; Dr. Dwight L. Smith III, LSC vice chancellor, Academic Success; Dr. Rebecca Riley, LSC-Montgomery president; Dr. Lee Ann Nutt, LSC-Tomball president; Dr. Shah Ardalan, LSC-University Park president; Dr. Quentin Wright, special assistant to the chancellor; and Helen Clougherty, LSC vice chancellor, Chief of Staff/Board Liaison.

“In minimizing the courses completed, we minimize time and cost of obtaining the undergraduate degree,” said Head. “We have seen 2,200 Lone Star College students transfer to the University of St. Thomas over the last 18 years, and we expect that number to continue to grow even faster thanks to this partnership.”

LSC also has articulation agreements with many other universities in Texas and nationwide to create an all-in-one transition from a LSC associate degree to bachelor’s degrees. For more information go to LoneStar.edu/academic-programs-transfer.htm.
