Lone Star College Board Chair reelected to Community College Association of Texas Trustees

Alton Smith, Ed.D., Lone Star College System Board of Trustees chair, was reelected to serve on the Community College Association of Texas Trustees (CCATT) Board of Directors at large position. Dr. Smith was first elected to the CCATT board in 2018.

“I am honored to be elected to serve another term for this very important organization,” said Dr. Smith. “I believe education and training are the most powerful weapons one can use to change the world and I look forward to continuing the mission of the Community College Association of Texas Trustees.”

The election took place during the 2020 CCATT Annual Business Meeting. In addition to Dr. Smith’s election, three additional at large positions, a chair-elect and secretary were also selected to serve.

“This is quite an honor for Dr. Smith,” said Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC chancellor. “This reflects his support of the Community College Association of Texas Trustees, his national involvement, his passion and the reputation of Lone Star College.”

CCATT advocates for community colleges and provides professional development to Texas trustees and regents to foster student success and ensure excellence in governance.

Dr. Smith also serves as board member for the Association of Community College Trustees, a nonprofit educational organization of governing boards, representing more than 6,500 elected and appointed trustees who govern over 1,200 community, technical, and junior colleges in the United States and beyond.

Dr. Smith, the first to graduate high school in his family, earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Southern University, an MBA in Finance from Texas Southern University and an Ed.D. from Sam Houston State University.

Following a successful career with Shell Oil Co., Dr. Smith became an educator in 1997 spending 14 years with Goose Creek Consolidated ISD and Klein ISD as a teacher, department chair, assistant principal, principal and director of Human Resources. He then became a member of the Aldine ISD Board of Trustees in October 2005, and was elected to the LSC Board of Trustees in 2014.
