Honor society students recognized with national scholarships at LSC-North Harris

Students Hung Nguyen, Nicole Rolison, and Sungja Mcnelly are among the nearly 200 national Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society members to receive the 2020 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise or Trustmark Workforce Development Scholarship.

Nguyen and Rolison were each awarded the $1,000 Leaders of Promise Scholarship and selected as recipients out of nearly 700 applicants nationwide. The scholarship helps new PTK members who are enrolled in associate degree programs with educational expenses. Nguyen is pursuing his Associate of Arts degree with plans to earn a degree in Sociology, while Rolison is completing her Associate of Science degree on her path to becoming an ultrasound technician.

“I was surprised because this is my first time to receive an honors scholarship,” Nguyen said. “Receiving this is a huge encouragement for me to keep going and to continue my educational journey.”

“This scholarship is going to take away some of the financial burdens that not only come with being a college student, but also a working mother of two small children,” Rolison said. “This award gives me more confidence and motivation than any dollar amount can.”

Mcnelly is one of just 25 PTK members to receive the $200 Trustmark Workforce Development Scholarship, designed to help students with workforce entry. The scholarship aims to assist students with paying for certification exams, tools, or equipment needed for their program. Mcnelly is working towards her Associate of Applied Science degree to become a paralegal.

“I was so pleased and appreciative of Trustmark to give me such a great opportunity,” Mcnelly said. “This scholarship will help me with tuition and fees, and it allows me to join paralegal associations to expand my network to get hired after graduation.”
