Lone Star College awarded $749,080 in federal grants

The U.S. Dept. of Education awarded Lone Star College $749,080 in funding as part of its Strengthening Institutions Program. The grants are designed to serve low-income students by providing support to improve and strengthen the academic quality and institutional management of eligible institutions.

“This specific grant will be used by LSC-CyFair and LSC-University Park and go toward the development and improvement of academic programs,” said Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC chancellor. “It will assist Lone Star College in providing low-income students with the resources necessary to move them into core courses and program completion, including remedial education and math instruction.”

The goal of the grant is to increase student retention and progression through college-level courses by re-engineering student support services and supplemental instruction, while providing enhanced faculty professional development. The grant is anticipated to be supported for a total of 5 years.

“It is crucial that Texas students are provided with the resources necessary to succeed as the school year starts back up,” said Sen. John Cornyn in a written statement. “I’ll continue to do everything in my power to ensure Lone Star College can offer the best possible education for its students.”

LSC will be required to submit an interim performance report after the first six months of the grant. An annual performance report is due 90 days after each budget period ends.
