CYPRESS, Texas (Nov. 30, 2020) Holding the annual fall Student Art Exhibition and awards virtually was not ideal, but the show must go on and it is, through Dec. 8.

See for yourself the award-winning work of Lone Star College-CyFair’s talented student artists showcased on Instagram: @bosquegallery.

“We are so proud of the students who worked hard in the unusual circumstances of this semester to create beautiful and meaningful work regardless of the changes in studio structure,” said Bosque Gallery Director, Jasleen Sarai. “This semester’s Best of Show photograph captures a very difficult shot highlighting the play between light and naturally complex space of the cave.”

BEST IN SHOW: "Womb of the Earth" by Brittany DeLeon

Best in Show winner Brittany DeLeon describes her piece as showing a place where a prehistoric bear claw was found, a cave where bats, mice, a plant, and insects came from the depths of the cave, lived and died.

“This piece is a photograph of a cave system here in Texas,” said DeLeon. “The reason I call it the ‘Womb of the Earth’ is because although no sunlight reaches these caves, life can still thrive.”

CERAMICS WINNER: "The Three Main Food Groups" by Julia EspinoJulia Espino won first in design with “Seasons Bliss” and second with her salt and pepper shakers held in a loaf of bread ceramic piece titled “Three Main Food Groups.”

“I was inspired by the food we eat as children and college students. PB&J sandwiches are so simple, yet bring up so many memories from childhood or humble beginnings,” she said.

The end-of the-semester student art exhibition includes student creativity expressed in a multi-media representation of drawings, two-dimensional design works, ceramics, photography and painting. This fall’s first- through third-place award winners, respectively, were:

  • drawing: Elysse Michelle, Taro Bush, Adian Jones
  • two-dimensional design works: Julia Espino, Perry Hutcheson, Taylor Abigail
  • ceramics: Angelica Murray, Julia Espino, Jordan Lueck
  • photography: Karen Abularach, Nikolas Luangrath and Joy Patel
  • and painting: Melissa Irizarry Redd, Lauren Wurzinger, no third place.
