LSC-CyFair’s Librarians Celebrate Movers and Shakers for Women’s History Month

CYPRESS, Texas (March 5, 2021) Several virtual books clubs and events celebrate stories of women pursue change in the past that make a difference in the present as part of Women’s History Month at Lone Star College-CyFair.

African-American Activist Ida B. WellsJoin Rachel Hugenberg, librarian and Learning, Inspiration, Friendship and Enrichment (L.I.F.E.) coordinator, and guest speakers Park Ranger Susan M. Philpott of the Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument and Raul Reyes, LSC-CyFair professor of history, for special presentations. at the 10 a.m. March 10 and March 31 L.I.F.E. programs.

First, at the 10 a.m. March 10 program (cyflib.info/LIFECYF ), Philpott shares the unique contributions to the U.S. women’s rights and civil rights movements of African-American Activist Ida B. Wells. Then, at the 10 a.m. March 31 program (cyflib.info/LIFECYF ), Reyes examines the role of family and compelling life experiences behind the activism of first Chicano Civil Rights leaders Dolores Huerta and Cesár Chávez. 

Stacy Lee's “The Downstairs Girl.”In conjunction with LSC-CyFair’s 2020-21 Women’s Suffrage Centennial Book Club, Faculty Librarian Regina Vitolo and Assistant Library Director Melanie Wachsmann facilitate two book club talks (cyflib.info/womenbc) on fictional selections set against the women's rights movement of the Twentieth Century.

Join Wachsmann at a 6:30 p.m. March 24 webex( cyflib.info/womenbc1) to discuss Stacy Lee’s powerful novel about identity, betrayal and the meaning of family titled “The Downstairs Girl.”  According to The Washington Post, "This vividly rendered historic novel will keep readers riveted as witty, observant Jo deals with the dangers of questioning power."

“Stories from Suffragette City” by editors M. J. Rose and Fiona DavisThen at a 6:30 p.m. March 31 webex (cyflib.info/womenbc2), Vitolo discusses “Stories from Suffragette City” by editors M. J. Rose and Fiona Davis. This book is a collection of short stories that all take place on a single day: October 23, 1915. It's the day when tens of thousands of women marched up Fifth Avenue, demanding the right to vote in New York City.

In addition, join the 1 p.m. March 27 webex  (cyflib.info/catt) with special guest Tim Lane for a discussion on his great-great-aunt, Carrie Lane Chapman Catt, International Suffrage Leader, who created League of Women Voters and advocated for World Peace. Members of National 19th Amendment Society will provide a virtual tour of Carrie’s Girlhood Home Museum and share insights into her life and work.
