AMATYC selects LSC-North Harris professor as recipient of Teaching Excellence Award

The American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) has awarded Lone Star College-North Harris’ Mathematics professor Jennifer Travis with the 2021 Teaching Excellence Award.

Travis is recognized as one of three recipients who were selected by a committee of AMATYC members for their commitment to excellence in instructional effectiveness, professional involvement, interaction with colleagues, and service to their department.

“I am just really thankful that I have had the opportunity to be involved with AMATYC and the MAA (Mathematics Association of America) and other professional organizations,” Travis said. “It's given me a big-picture perspective that I wouldn't have if I didn't interact with anyone outside of Lone Star College.”

In addition to teaching her traditional classes, Travis oversees the Preparation for Industrial Careers (PIC) in Mathematics program for honor students. Travis’s students work in teams to solve real-world problems for local businesses. As part of the program, Travis prepares the students for future careers by helping the students set up LinkedIn accounts.

“I get to learn what colleagues in other places and different kinds of schools are doing and become inspired by them,” Travis said. “Sometimes, I have been able to learn about opportunities and ideas and then bring those to students at our campus.”

Travis is invited to the AMATYC Annual Conference in October to receive her award during the keynote session and be recognized for her teaching excellence.
