LSC-Tomball receives grant to assist individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds

The U.S. Department of Education awarded Lone Star College-Tomball a Talent Search Program grant in the amount of $1,386,872 to help those from disadvantaged backgrounds get the opportunity to succeed in higher education.

“Students participating in the program will take part in group workshops and engaging activities that will help them graduate high school and be prepared to enroll into Lone Star College,” said Lee Ann Nutt, Ed.D., LSC-Tomball president. “I am excited to bring these educational opportunities to an underserved community.”

The LSC-Tomball Talent Search Program will focus on schools located in Waller County. Research data shows a large percentage of the population living in the Royal and Waller Independent School Districts are living below the poverty level compared to state and national averages and have a large concentration of eligible participants.

The grant, which was 100% funded by the U.S. Department of Education, will be used to provide academic, career and financial counseling to its participants and encourage them to graduate from high school and continue on to and complete their postsecondary education.

“Through one-on-one and group activities, the LSC-Tomball Talent Search students will get support to plan for their high school graduation and postsecondary education that will align with their goals,” said Nutt.

LSC-Tomball was awarded a Talent Search Program five-year grant in the amount of $1,386,872 from the U.S. Department of Education to help those from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education.
