LSC-University Park hosts AHA Northwest Harris County Heart Walk Nov. 19

Lone Star College-University Park (LSC-University Park) is committed to supporting a healthy, active community. On Saturday, Nov. 19, the college will host, for its seventh year, the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Northwest Harris County (NWHC) Heart Walk.

“Our motto is Lion Heart, UP Pride. It is fitting we welcome the Heart Walk to our campus each year,” said Dr. Shah Ardalan LSC-University Park president. “We are the community’s college. The walk is another opportunity to raise community awareness and make a lasting difference for employees, students, families, and the community we serve.

Three thousand walkers, including several teams from Lone Star College, hospitals, local school districts, businesses, and individuals from the community, are expected to participate in the non-competitive, three-mile walk or run at the campus. The event is child and pet-friendly, so bring the whole family. The Heart Walk also provides morning festivities with heart-healthy treats, giveaways, heart-pumping activities, medical screenings, advice on heart health, and a Kid’s Zone sponsored by LSC-University Park. The Expo festivities begin at 8 a.m., and the walk will start at 9 a.m. at LSC-University Park’s Energy and Manufacturing Institute parking lot.

Heart disease and stroke survivors are the heart of the Heart Walk. Heart disease accounts for about one of every three deaths in the United States. Organizers hope to raise $280,000 to support the fight against heart disease and stroke. LSC-University Park has a goal of raising $5,000 for the event. The annual AHA NWHC Heart Walk aims to spread awareness to those susceptible to heart disease and teach proper care techniques, such as CPR, to their families. Paula Harvey, Vice President of Human Resources at Schulte Building Systems, is chairing this year's walk.
