Program Overview & Mission
Our Vision
At Lone Star College, our vision is to become a premier provider of Special Olympics training and competition. We approach every project and practice with one goal in mind: improving the quality of life for our student-athletes. We embrace future challenges with genuine enthusiasm, staying committed to evolving alongside the needs of our athletes.
Our Mission & Unified Sports
The mission of the Lone Star College Delegations is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in various Olympic-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
We are firm believers in the Unified Sports model, which creates a "sharing of gifts" by joining athletes and partners (those without intellectual disabilities) on the same team. This inclusive environment allows everyone to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and experience true joy within the Lone Star College community.

Competition & Performance
Lone Star College is part of a massive year-round movement that includes over 300 annual competitions at the area, regional, and state levels.
- Fair Play: We use event divisions based on age, gender, and ability so every athlete has an honest shot at winning.
- Recognition: Every single participant is recognized with a medal or ribbon after their event.
- Statewide Reach: Our teams target six major Texas events: Summer Games, Basketball, TopGolf, Fall Classic, Winter Games, and Flag Football.
- The Big Stage: We also look toward the horizon of the USA National Games (every four years) and the World Games (every two years).
Training Standards
Success on the field starts with discipline in practice:
- Preparation: Our athletes commit to a minimum of eight weeks of training before any competition.
- Certified Coaching: Training is led by coaches who must complete a formal certification program and attend seasonal training schools.
- Quality Control: Even our event directors and officials undergo specific training to ensure every meet is run professionally.
Health & Wellness: Healthy LEAP
We believe athletic success is tied to overall well-being. Through the Healthy LEAP (Lifestyle, Education, and Practice) curriculum, we provide lessons specifically designed for youth with and without intellectual disabilities. We focus on:
- Nutrition & Fitness: Practical applications for a healthier daily routine.
- Holistic Health: Encouraging athletes and partners to improve their physical activity while supporting their emotional and social health.
