Generative AI is an advanced technology that can analyze and replicate vast amounts of data to produce content such as text, images, music, video, code, and more, based on specific inputs or prompts. Lone Star College encourages responsible exploration of Generative AI tools, while keeping in mind critical considerations around information security, data privacy, compliance, copyright, and academic integrity.

Protect Confidential Data

Please avoid entering any confidential data (e.g., student records, HR data, or financial information) into publicly accessible Generative AI tools. In line with our college's Information Security Policy, data entered into these tools using default settings is not private and may unintentionally expose sensitive information.

Only enter confidential data into Generative AI tools that have been evaluated and approved for such use by Lone Star College's Office of Technology Services.

Connect with OTS Before Procuring Generative AI Tools

The Office of Technology Services (OTS) is working to ensure that tools procured on behalf of Lone Star College have the appropriate privacy and security protections and provide the best use of Lone Star College funds.

  1. If you have procured or are considering procuring generative AI tools or have questions, contact the IT Service Desk or read more about tools currently available or coming soon.
  2. Vendor generative AI tools must be assessed for risk by Lone Star College's Office of Technology Services prior to use.

Review Content Before Publication

AI-generated content can sometimes be inaccurate, misleading, or even entirely false (known as “hallucinations”) and may contain copyrighted material. You are responsible for any content you publish that includes material generated by AI.

Follow Academic Policies

Review our college's faculty and student handbooks for current policies, as our guidelines on the use of Generative AI in academic work will continue to evolve. Faculty members are encouraged to clarify with students their expectations for any AI-generated content in assignments. Students should feel free to ask instructors for guidance on using AI tools in their coursework.

Be Aware of Phishing Risks

Generative AI enables malicious actors to create more sophisticated phishing emails and realistic “deepfakes”—audio or video mimicking a person’s voice or appearance without consent. Stay vigilant and continue to follow best practices to be cyber-smart and stay cyber-secure. Report any suspicious messages by any of these methods:
