A group of Lone Star College students and two History professors are headed to Spain, Portugal, and Morocco for a study abroad experience that promises to be a life-changing global adventure.

LSC-Kingwood History Professor Steve Davis and LSC-Online History Professor Chris Davis will accompany fourteen students to the countries from May 13th through May 29th.

“What I hope students gain is a thirst to learn about the wider world,” said Steve Davis.  “We want to infect them with the travel bug during these fifteen nights in Europe. It’s so important to start international travel early and to make it a lifelong vocation. Inspiring that is a major goal of this study abroad.”

LSC-Kingwood student Teresa Barbee is thrilled for the opportunity. “It affords a perspective to glean human similarities while exploring and learning about cultural differences. I love architecture and can't wait to see the historical preservation of various structures that co-exist with innovation."

The group will visit Lisbon, Albufeira, Algeciras, Seville, and Madrid with day trips to Tangier, Morocco, and to the British territory of Gibraltar. Students will earn credit for either HUMA 1302 or HIST 2322.

Jorge Luis Sanchez Gutiérrez from LSC-Tomball is another one of the students going on the trip.

“I am incredibly blessed and excited to be part of this remarkable group of students, united by curiosity and purpose. Through this journey, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of global cultures, broaden my perspective, and grow both personally and academically with every moment we share”.

Some of the excursions the students will experience in Portugal include visiting Saint George Castle in Lisbon and attending a Liga Portugal football game.

In Spain, the students will explore the famed Cathedral and Alcázar of Seville, as well as enjoy a Flamenco performance.

While in Madrid, the group will visit Hotel Europa in Puerta del Sol and the Reina Sofia art museum, among other sites.

“I am incredibly excited to return to study abroad with Lone Star College-this time to Spain and Portugal,” shared LSC-Montgomery student Breniyah Maxey. “Having already experienced how transformative international travel can be, I am looking forward to diving even deeper into the rich cultures, histories, and languages of these amazing countries.”

Also, part of the itinerary – a stop in Tangier, Morocco. And of course, the trip wouldn’t be complete without a tour of the Rock of Gibraltar to see the rock apes.

“At Lone Star College-Kingwood, we aim to provide educational opportunities that enrich the whole community,” Professor Steve Davis remarked. “Why shouldn’t our students have the same study abroad opportunities that their counterparts have at four-year and even elite institutions? LSC-Kingwood has always been a special place in its aim to set itself apart from its peers in the quality and range of its educational offerings. This incredible study abroad is a prime example. I’m so proud of what it communicates about our college and its mission.”
