Jose Aguilar, is blazing his trail as he works towards his goals at Lone Star College-North Harris. Originally from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, Aguilar moved to Houston with his family. Growing up, Aguilar was influenced by his parents.
“My parents have always done everything in their power to give me and my brothers a life they couldn’t have growing up,” Aguilar shared. “My dad, who is the head of the household, is a roofer and horse trainer who has always done everything to ensure we always have the essentials. From him, I learned the importance of being a hard worker and giving the best of myself. My mom is constantly looking for opportunities for herself and us, always looking to give us the best advice and emotional support when we need it.”
After graduating from Carver High School in 2022, Aguilar enrolled at LSC-North Harris in the spring semester of 2023, with a clear vision of what he wanted to study.
“Something that led me to choose this program was the good reputation LSC-North Harris has with its Applied Technology programs,” Aguilar said. “I knew I wanted to study diesel engines because of my curiosity and love for trucks, engines, pistons, and hydraulic systems.”
Apart from studying, Aguilar has been a member of the Mariachi Los Huracanes de North Harris since its inception in fall 2023 when he served as the club’s president. This would not be the first time he started a mariachi group. Aguilar played a key role in starting the first mariachi group at Carver High School when he was a student in 2018. He would then go on to receive high scores in several UIL competitions.
As a student at LSC-North Harris, Aguilar and the Mariachi Los Huracanes have gone on to perform at several events, including the 2024 LSC-North Harris Commencement and the 2024 Lone Star College Convocation. As if being a student and performer weren’t enough, Aguilar is also a youth soccer coach and has his own mariachi group on the side.
Aguilar is currently on track to graduate in December 2025 and is enjoying his time as a student on our campus.
“What I love about attending LSC-North Harris is that can run freely as a technician and as a mariachi,” Aguilar mused. “There is a feeling of unity and equality, and the staff members all around make me feel at home. At LSC-North Harris, I’m treated as a person and not a number.”
