The TRIO Student Support Services (TRIO SSS) program at Lone Star College-Kingwood has been awarded a new $1.3 million grant this year. The grant is for 5 years and can accept 140 eligible students.
The TRIO SSS program serves students who are first-generation, limited income, or those who may have a documented disability. The grant funds will provide academic support for motivated students who would like to complete a certification or pursue their post-secondary degree. The program is designed to offer activities and workshops that encourage students to academically persist.
TRIO SSS Project Manager Danielle Ward says TRIO is an important program that helps students navigate higher education.
“Our experiences are designed to promote personal growth and academic success through intrusive advising and cultivating mentoring relationships with our students.”
This is the second time that LSC-Kingwood has been awarded this grant from the Department of Education. During the first cycle, TRIO SSS provided opportunities for students to learn outside the classroom such as visiting state-of-the-art museums, attending the symphony, and more. In addition, TRIO SSS collaborates with other campus departments to offer college tours to universities, and to date, students have visited 18 colleges and universities in Texas.
“Some students question if college is right for them,” remarked Ward. “TRIO SSS provides a support system and gives students the resources to complete their educational studies at Lone Star College and advocate on their behalf when they face an obstacle. The ultimate goal is for our students to confidently achieve their academic goals and learn to advocate for themselves, while achieving what they previously thought was impossible.”
There are currently 125 students enrolled in the TRIO program at LSC-Kingwood. Students who are interested in applying can click here to complete the application.
