Due to popular demand, the Kingwood Chorale and Chamber Orchestra will present Handel’s Messiah this year in two locations and will feature some notable professional soloists.
Handel’s Messiah has an enduring popularity due to its dramatic solos and choruses, including the famed “Hallelujah” chorus.
Lone Star College-Kingwood Music Director Dr. Todd Miller is the artistic director and is entering his 30th season of conducting the Kingwood Chorale, which is in residence at LSC-Kingwood.
“It is hard to believe it has been 30 years, and it has been a joy to conduct this ensemble which is filled with LSC-Kingwood music students, music teachers, and professionals in other fields who share a passion for music,” he remarked.
Around one hundred voices will be joining to sing the beloved Messiah, and a 21-piece professional orchestra will accompany.
Professional soloists performing include soprano and audience favorite Nancy Curtis, who has performed all over the world, including the New York City Opera and Houston Grand Opera. She has also been invited to sing for former Presidents George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Ronald Reagan. In addition, she sang the national anthem during the games for several Houston sport teams.
Former LSC-Kingwood student Dr. LaMarcus Miller (bass) is flying in from the east coast for the occasion. Dr. LaMarcus Miller is a voice professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and has performed at venues including The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and the New York City Opera. While here in Kingwood, Dr. LaMarcus Miller will hold master classes for the LSC-Kingwood music majors.
LSC-Kingwood music faculty members Carolena Lara (mezzo-soprano) and Brian Yeakley (tenor) will also be showcasing their incredible talent during the performances.
The Kingwood Chorale and Chamber Orchestra will be presenting Messiah in two locations this year. The first performance will take place Saturday night, November 22 at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Kingwood, 5629 Kingwood Drive. The second performance will be held on Sunday afternoon, November 23 at 4:00 p.m. at Atascocita Methodist Church, 19325 Pinehurst Trail.
“Both sanctuaries have warm and resonant acoustics, and we are grateful these congregations have opened their doors to the KCCO for the benefit of the entire community,” said Dr. Todd Miller.
