Nina Javaher, Ph.D., Department Chair and Professor of Computer Science at Lone Star College-Online, has been appointed to a key role in shaping the future of computer science education in Texas. She serves on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s (THECB) Texas Transfer Advisory Committee (TTAC) Discipline-Specific Subcommittee, to aid in the development of the Texas Transfer Field of Study Curriculum (FOSC) for Computer Science.

Dr. Javaher is also the co-chair of this statewide committee, representing Community Colleges across the state of Texas. The purpose of this committee is to help transform computer science education in Texas by standardizing curriculum and creating clear, and affordable transfer pathways for students across the state.

As part of this collaborative effort, Dr. Javaher works with college and university leaders across the state of Texas to help ensure the new curriculum balances flexibility with a strong academic foundation.

“This work is about creating smooth, efficient pathways for students,” Dr. Javaher said. “It breaks my heart when students take courses they don’t need, every unnecessary class means extra cost and extra time. Our goal is to eliminate those barriers so students can plan confidently, graduate faster, and focus on their future.”

The new curriculum, approved by THECB, ensures students can transfer without losing credits once core complete, while allowing universities to maintain unique requirements. Advising remains critical to help students select the right courses from the start.

“When students know exactly which courses transfer, they can make informed decisions,” Dr. Javaher explained. “That clarity reduces stress and financial strain. It’s about empowering students to take control of their academic journey.”

In addition to her statewide leadership, Dr. Javaher has developed free, Open Educational Resources (OER) for key computer science courses, published on the OERTX platform. These resources eliminate textbook costs for students across Texas, making computer science education more affordable and accessible.

Her three-year term gives her a vital voice in shaping decisions that impact thousands of students statewide, a responsibility she calls “an honor and a privilege.”

“The more I learn, the more I understand the challenges our students face, and how much responsibility we have to support them.” Dr. Javaher said. “It’s a privilege to collaborate with so many talented people and make sure our students’ voices are heard. At the end of the day, everything we do centers around student success, and that’s why this work matters.”

Carlos R. Morales, Ph.D., Lone Star College-Online Campus President, praised Dr. Javaher’s achievement, highlighting its significance for students across Texas. “Dr. Javaher’s leadership on this statewide committee will have a lasting impact, ensuring students have clear, affordable pathways to complete their degrees,” Dr. Morales said
