For Lone Star College–North Harris student Joel Magee, higher education has become more than a pathway to a degree — it has provided a sense of purpose and direction.

Magee, a Houston native born Dec. 8, 2004, began attending Lone Star College–North Harris in fall 2023 after graduating from Carl Wunsche Sr. High School in Spring, Texas. He said he chose the college for its affordability and as a stepping-stone toward a university education while he clarified his long-term goals.

Now a history major with a growing interest in political science, Magee plans to pursue graduate studies and ultimately become a professor. He credits several faculty members for inspiring that ambition, saying their mentorship motivated him to give back to future students in the same way.

“Education has given me a purpose in life,” Magee said, noting he never considered giving up on his academic journey. During his time at the college, Magee has taken on multiple leadership roles. He previously served as executive vice president of the campus chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and now serves as chapter president. He is also a founding member and chairman of the campus History Society, helping foster engagement among students with shared academic interests.

Magee said his experiences at Lone Star College–North Harris have been shaped not only by academics, but by the relationships he has built with faculty and peers.

“What I enjoy most … is the people I’ve met here,” he said, adding that the campus environment encourages intellectual conversations and personal growth.

Set to graduate in December, Magee said the most important lessons he has learned include the value of collaboration and the importance of education in shaping one’s future.

He encourages other students to take full advantage of their college experience, emphasizing that education extends beyond career preparation.

“College is not just an opportunity to graduate with a degree,” Magee said. “It is an opportunity to learn about the world around you and your place in it.”

As he prepares for the next step in his academic journey, Magee remains focused on his goal of making a lasting impact through education — both in his own life and in the lives of others.
