LSC-CyFair hosts multiple musical celebrations May 1 - May 8.

Lone Star College-CyFair’s Music Department hosts an exciting lineup of instrumental concerts, this year’s Contemporary Music Festival and a special musical journey through our nation’s history this May.

Kicking off the entertainment schedule is LSC-CyFair’s Symphonic Band and Symphony Orchestra Concert May 1 with Dr. Robert Bott directing their performance of pieces from musicals and opera, including instrument-only selections as well as works with vocalists, and followed with college’s Jazz Ensemble Concert May 5 under the direction of Ryan McArthur.

Be sure to save the date May 6 for the 7th Annual Contemporary Music Festival and Intercollegiate Student Composer Invitational featuring the LSC-CyFair Percussion Ensemble with Director Bobby McCullagh, guest violinist Mario Zelaya, who is celebrated for his emotive performances and technical skill, and the debut of the ARDEA Contemporary Players, the new ensemble of LSC-CyFair’s Composers Club.

Dr. Brian Herrington, festival organizer and ARDEA director, said this year’s three-event festival brings together student composers and performers from LSC-CyFair, LSC-Montgomery, University of Houston and Sam Houston State University showcasing bold, original music and experimental improvisation.

Don’t miss the conclusion of the college’s performing arts season with a musical journey through our nation’s history in the May 8 concert “Illuminare: America’s 250th Celebration.”

“Prepare for a powerful tribute that culminates in a grand finale dedicated to the Declaration of Independence,” said Dr. Paulo Gomes, LSC-CyFair Vocal Director.

In this unique collaboration among the college’s Music, Art, Drama and History Departments, LSC-CyFair brings together the entire community of students, alumni, faculty, staff and student artists to celebrate 250 years of American independence and the enduring spirit of unity, said Dr. Gomes, who will co-conduct the performance with Dr. Bott.

“For our students, this is a chance to bridge the classroom with the concert hall, gaining real-world experience while honoring the civic values that define us. For all of us, it is an opportunity to strengthen the bonds that make LSC-CyFair a true cultural heart for this region,” said Dr. Gomes.

The 7:30 p.m. concert features the LSC-CyFair Singers, String Orchestra (students and community), college faculty and staff, instrumentalists and the community.

Another opportunity to enjoy marking America’s anniversary musically will be with the free “American Sound and Influences” concert at 7 p.m. May 4. The Cypress Winds Community Band returns to the college’s Main Stage Theatre with this instrumental evening featuring “Sketches on a Tudor Psalm” by Tull, “Walking Tune” by Grainger/ Arr. Daeh. “Overture to Candide” by Bernstein/ Arr. Grundman, “Atomic Time” by David, “Liberty Fanfare” by Williams/Arr. Bocook and “El Capitan” by Sousa.
