Lone Star College-University Park to salute veterans

Lone Star College-University Park will host a Veterans Awareness Day Monday, Nov. 12 from 8 to 11 a.m. on the LSC-University Park campus, Bldg. 11, first floor. The event is to honor veterans and their families and educate the community on how to honor and treat those men and women who have served our country.

The day begins at 8 a.m. with the presentation of colors, the national anthem and Pledge of Allegiance. Beginning at 8:30 a.m., the Veterans Affair Center will hold a one-mile fun run on campus. Participants may run, walk or be a part of a four-person relay. The race begins at 8:30 a.m. Register for the race by emailing GIBill@lonestar.edu.

Lone Star Legal Aid will also offer free legal advice to veterans and community members from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Nebula, Bldg. 12. No appointment is necessary and all discussions are confidential.

Lone Star College System’s Veterans Affairs Center is located on the Lone Star College – University Park campus. The office opened in Feb. 2010. According to Tina Dealy, veteran’s affairs manager, “Currently, LSCS has 3,000 veterans enrolled in programs.” But that number is not truly reflective of all those who are served by the Center, Dealy added. “Besides providing area veterans and their family members with assistance in achieving their educational goals and making career transitions, the Center also provides community outreach and aid with other personal issues which resulted from their service to our country,” she said.

For more information on the event, please contact the Veterans Affairs Center at 281-290-2922.

LSC-University Park is the newest LSCS campus and includes one of the two LSCS university centers. The campus is located at the corner of State Highway 249 and Louetta Road across from Vintage Park. For more information about LSC-University Park, call 281.290.2600 or visit LoneStar.edu./UP.
