Lone Star College System and HCSO to Host Media Availability

HOUSTON (April 10, 2013) – Harris County Sheriff Garcia, HCSO investigators, and Lone Star College System will hold a media availability this morning at 11 a.m. at 701 N. San Jacinto to discuss yesterday's stabbings at the Lone Star Cy-Fair campus.

The LSC-CyFair campus will reopen for regularly scheduled classes and activities this morning (Wednesday). Counselors will be available to talk with students and employees and will be visiting the classes of those students who were victims as well. LSC-CyFair President, Audre Levy, and counselors will also be holding debriefing sessions about the incident for faculty and students.  We remain saddened by the events yesterday and understand if anyone is unable to attend classes today.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those injured and any witnesses as well as their families.

According to our latest reports, 7 injured students have been released from area hospitals and none remain in intensive care.  Lone Star College campus police and administration continue to work with the Harris County Sherriff’s Office on the ongoing investigation of the incident at LSC-CyFair yesterday morning.

We are proud of the response to the incident by our campus police, faculty, staff and students.  The campus evacuation was orderly and efficient and we thank our students and faculty for their calm cooperation during the emergency.  

Lone Star College System surveillance video and eye-witness accounts confirm that there was only one suspect involved in the incident. This suspect was apprehended by LSCS police and is currently in the custody of the Harris County Sherriff’s Office.  Initial charges have been filed.

The Harris County Sherriff’s Office and Lone Star College System police department are continuing their investigation of the incident and the HCSO will make appropriate statements regarding the investigation and the follow-up.  We will issue additional advisories as new information becomes available.

The LSC-CyFair campus will reopen for regularly scheduled classes on Wednesday morning.  Counselors will be available to talk with students and employees and will be visiting the classes of those students who were victims as well.  LSC-CyFair President, Audre Levy, and counselors will also be holding debriefing sessions about the incident for faculty and students.

The LSC-CyFair campus has been cleared and remains closed for the remainder of the day/evening. The campus will re-open for regularly scheduled classes and activities on Wednesday morning. All other Lone Star College locations, including the LSC-Fairbanks Center, remain open as scheduled.

LSC-CyFair was evacuated after a stabbing incident occurred at about 11:12am this morning. Lone Star College System surveillance video and eye-witness accounts confirm that there was only one suspect involved in the incident. Lone Star College System surveillance video and eye-witness accounts confirm that there was only one suspect in the stabbing incident at LSC-CyFair this morning.  This suspect was taken into custody by LSCS police and is currently in the custody of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.  The LSC-CyFair campus has been cleared and remains closed for the remainder of the day/evening. The campus evacuation was orderly and efficient.

The incident occurred in and around the LSC-CyFair Health Science Center at around 11:12 a.m.   There are 14 confirmed injuries; two of the victims are listed in critical condition and four in fair condition.  Six victims were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital and six to North Cypress Medical Center.  Four of the victims were airlifted and eight transported via ambulance with two refusing any treatment.   

The HCSO and campus police continue to investigate the incident and the campus remains an active crime scene.  We will issue additional advisories as new information becomes available.

The LSC-Cy Fair Campus remains on lockdown and is currently being evacuated by law enforcement. Traffic flow out of campus parking lots is being managed by LSCS campus police and Harris County Sherriff’s Office. LSC-CyFair campus will be closed for the remainder of the day/evening. The LSC-Fairbanks Center remains open.

The media staging area has been established at the south parking lot near the Learning Commons/Library building.

The incident occurred near and around the Health Science Center and remains an active crime scene with changing and evolving information. HCSO has one suspect is in custody and another suspect may possibly be at large.

There are 11 confirmed victims; 4 have been transported by life-flight and others by ambulance to area hospitals.

More information will be issued as it becomes available.

Lone Star College System confirms that there was a stabbing incident at LSC-CyFair this morning (at about 11:20 a.m.).  There are multiple injuries and conflicting reports on the total number of victims and severity of injuries. We can confirm that several people have been transported to area hospitals.

Harris County Sheriff’s Department is also on the scene and has one suspect in custody.  There are reports that another suspect is at large. 

Lone Star College System has established an incident command in Room 154 of the LSC-CyFair Conference Center and Lone Star College System deputy chief Jerome Powell is the incident commander.  Other college officials are on their way to the scene and more information will be issued when it becomes available.

Two armed suspects at LSC-CyFair. One suspect is at large. Stay away from the area. Seek shelter in a secure location until the incident is resolved. Be aware of your surroundings. If you have reason to believe that the suspect is in or near your location, notify LSC Police at 281.290.5911, if it is safe to do so. Updates on the situation will follow as new and confirmed information becomes available.
