Unique Opportunities for LSC-Tomball Fine Arts Students

Entertainment for Everyone in the Tomball Area!

TOMBALL, TX:  LSC-Tomball’s Fine and Performing Arts department unveiled a season of exciting, enchanting and entertaining performances that’s featured four concerts, two stage plays, three musicals and a night of Comedy Improv.  The lineup included a special concert by the world-renowned United States Army Field Band’s Jazz Ambassadors, which performed on Veteran’s Day in the Performing Arts Center.

One of the season’s most anticipated events brings together the LSC-Tomball Drama and Music departments for A Very Tomball Christmas: Home for the Holidays, a Broadway-style musical revue December 5, 6, and 7 in the Performing Arts Center.

“With the holiday musical this year, we’re doing something we’ve never done before – a collaboration that brings together our music and drama students as a team in a performance that puts the spotlight on the specialness of the Tomball community,” said Dr. Lisa Morales, Fine Arts Department Chair and Music Program Director.

The Drama department presented Angel Street, a play written by Patrick Hamilton, which critics have said is one of the most suspenseful stage plays of all time.

Angel Street is a psychological thriller,” said Professor Jill Brumer, Head of the Drama department at LSC-Tomball.  She selected the play that takes place in 1880’s London and revolves around a young wife who is being slowly driven insane by the curious incidents happening around her home.  The suspenseful performances, that ran right before Halloween in the LSC-Tomball Blackbox Theater, kept the audience on the edge of its seat.

Dr. Morales says there's a special energy in the Fine and Performing Arts department this year, “We've done really great work with our students in the Fine Arts program and now we're looking to become even more purposeful in how we help students achieve their specific goals.”

The department is piloting components of a special program designed to give interested students additional training in the area of musical theater; masterclasses, purposeful instruction, and unique performance experiences are hallmarks of this new initiative.  Called The Texas Institute of Musical Theater, the program will also assist serious students in their preparation for professional programs.

“Not only do we want our students to graduate with a Fine Arts emphasis in drama, music, or technical theater,” Morales said, “We also want to give our students the training and experiences to equip them for the next step of their professional journey.”

LSC-Tomball’s Fine and Performing Arts program offers students many opportunities to explore, learn and participate in music, drama and art.

For example, the Music department offers courses for both music majors and non-music majors. Performance ensembles and applied lessons are open to all students, college employees and community members who are interested.  Music majors can transfer credit to any four-year Texas college or university after completing the degree program at LSC-Tomball.

The Drama department offers a wide variety of theater classes for major and non-major students and the opportunity to learn and participate in acting, directing, costuming, make-up, and scene, light and sound design. Course work combined with hands-on experience prepares theater students to continue their education at a four-year university or to begin a professional career.

The Art department offers high quality courses in painting and drawing, photography, digital art, studio art, art appreciation and art history. The program provides several skill development courses that help advance and improve artistic talents while preparing students for college-level courses and future careers in design.

“Everyone is welcome at any time to take one of our classes and to be a part of one of our productions,” Morales said, adding, “There's a wonderful group of students, faculty and mentors here at the college to help students get started.”
