Students Host Día de los Muertos Digital Exhibit

Día de los Muertos Art ExhibitLone Star College-CyFair student artists will celebrate the colorful and celebratory Día de los Muertos Oct. 29 through Nov. 2.

“We typically celebrate Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, with a display in the Center for the Arts lobby,” explains Humanities Professor Cambria Stamper. “However, this year’s exhibit will be available in a digital format and only for five days. So mark your calendar to view our student talent and to add a little cultural discussion into your family celebration.”

This digital exhibit will highlight images of student visual and written work engaging with ideas around Día de los Muertos, which honors the lives and memories of people who have passed.

“The student work showcased in our digital display will reflect what you would see - as part of a cultural practice that meshes indigenous beliefs from Mexico with Catholicism -  in celebrations which have extended into the United States, throughout Latin America, and beyond,” said Stamper.

Día de los Muertos takes place over several days with people gathering together and visiting places their loved ones are buried, where they place flowers, food and objects the loved ones enjoyed, and other remembrances, she said.

In keeping with positive celebrations of loved ones’ lives, a whimsical and sometimes comical approach is taken to special food, artwork, songs, and parades, she continued. Sugar candies shaped as skulls; dioramas of skeletons playing musical instruments; and people painting their faces as skulls and wearing bright clothing, highlight a collective acknowledgment of life and death during this time.
