Join Talks on Language, Newsroom and Pandemic Experiences through a Hispanic Lens

Lone Star College-CyFair’s Diversity Committee hosts two more virtual events featuring March 30 and April 6 conversations with researcher Jens Manuel Krogstad and reporter Maria Hinojosa, respectively.

Jens Manuel Krogstad The upcoming 2 p.m. webex (bit.ly/2Mjq6Aa) conversation with Krogstad, a senior writer and editor at Pew Research Center,  is titled "Native Languages and Latinx: The Pew Research Center on Latino and Hispanic Identities.” He will share some findings on the usage of the English Language and of the term "Latinx" as they relate to Hispanic and Latino/a communities.

Krogstad has authored or edited hundreds of studies on topics that include global migration, Latino public opinion, Hispanic demographic trends and U.S. border enforcement. Prior to joining Pew Research Center, he spent nine years as a reporter at newspapers such as The Des Moines Register and USA Today.

The 3 p.m. April 6 webex (bit.ly/3sAAZ06) conversation with Hinojosa, an NPR Journalist and Producer of Latino USA, is titled “The First Latina in Many Newsrooms.” She will speak about some of her experiences in American newsrooms as well as COVID pandemic-related experiences of students in the Bronx she interviewed.

Maria HinojosaAs founder and president of The Futuro Media Group, an independent, nonprofit newsroom based in Harlem, NYC, Hinojosa creates independent, multimedia journalism that explores and gives a critical voice to the diverse American experience. Through award-winning podcasts and Latino USA show, Hinojosa has informed millions about the changing cultural and political landscape in America and abroad.

“With a primary goal to promote awareness surrounding issues pertaining to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, our committee is excited to host these spring events for our employees and students as well as the Cy-Fair community,” said Dr. Jennifer Jenkins, LSC-CyFair committee chair.
