Champions Sunrise Rotary, LSC-University Park partner for student scholarships

Deserving students at Lone Star College-University Park will soon be the beneficiaries of the generosity of the Champions Sunrise Rotary Club, thanks to its recent decision to direct proceeds from its annual golf tournament to the college in the form of student scholarships.

"We are delighted that the Champions Sunrise Rotarians see the value of investing financial resources in our students,” said LSC-University Park President Dr. Shah Ardalan. “As the community’s college, we are proud to partner with community organizations and civic groups that align with our mission of making higher education accessible to all students. These scholarships will change the lives of students and their families.”

Champions Sunrise Rotary has hosted a golf tournament for the past 20 years, with last year’s event cancelled due to COVID-19. This year, the club plans to hold a safe, socially-distanced tournament at Longwood Golf Club on Friday, June 11, 2021.

Michael Jackson, the 2020-21 president of the Champions Sunrise Rotary Club, said that the club has historically partnered with a variety of community organizations to provide support and service to young people and families in need. The decision to partner with LSC-University Park was an obvious choice.

"We feel the time is right to direct the proceeds to our local college students," said Jackson. "We know the majority of LSC-University Park students work while they attend classes. Many of them support families, which compounds the problem of financing an education to improve their lives. Certainly, the pandemic has only created additional challenges for these students. We want to help.”

The Rotary Club has requested that the scholarships go to students who demonstrate financial need, have shown service to the community, and who are local to the area. The initial goal for the first year is to provide multiple two-year scholarships at $2,500 per year beginning with the fall 2021 semester.

More details about the Champions Sunrise Rotary Club golf tournament is available by contacting golf tournament chair Fred Soliz at (281) 794-0843. The early bird entry fee (by May 15) is $150 per golfer and $500 for foursomes. Hole sponsorships and prize donations are also needed. Players, teams and donors can sign up for the tournament at https://rotarygolf2021.ezevent.com
