Lone Star College-Tomball awarded $1.5 million grant to increase enrollment and graduation rates

The U.S. Department of Education awarded Lone Star College-Tomball a $1.5 million Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP) grant to increase overall enrollment as well as persistence and graduation rates through the Tomball Experience project.

“The funds from this grant will be used to strengthen equitable access for our most vulnerable students,” said Lee Ann Nutt, Ed.D., LSC-Tomball president. “The newly created LSC-Tomball Career and Transfer Center will address the specific needs for this group of students who have the potential to succeed in higher education.”

The five-year grant, which was 100% funded by the U.S. Department of Education, will also be used to strengthen employer partnerships by utilizing strategic planning and evidence informed practices.

Students participating in the Tomball Experience project will receive academic, career, and financial counseling to prepare them to enter the workforce. This project will incorporate strategies designed to align academic support practices to changing workforce needs through the LSC-Tomball Career and Transfer Center.

“Many of our first time in college or first generation in college students have trouble navigating their way through college,” said Nutt. “I am excited that we are able to develop an all-encompassing support system to help them on their journey to a better life.”

LSC-Tomball welcomed over 900 first time in college students in fall 2021, representing 10% of the total student population.
