TRIO Educational Talent Search awarded new grant funding at LSC-North Harris

TRIO Educational Talent Search (ETS) is excited to announce the program received a newly funded grant for more than $1.5 million. TRIO ETS provides free support services to help first-generation and low-income students successfully complete secondary school and prepare them to complete a postsecondary education of their choice.

“The goal is to create an awareness that going to college is possible and to learn about the various resources available to students,” said Magdalena Mendoza-Starck, interim vice president, LSC-North Harris. “This grant is specifically designed to support first-generation college students, and as a first-generation college student, this work is important because we have the opportunity to changes the trajectory of a student’s life and their families.”

The grant will last for five years and operate from Sept. 1, 2021, to Aug. 31, 2026, and is 100% funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The annual budget of $300,675 will serve a total of 542 students from Aldine ISD, Klein ISD, and Spring ISD. The program has valuable partnerships with Wunderlich Intermediate, Nimitz Ninth Grade, Nimitz Senior High School, Klein Forest High School, and Westfield High School.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to continue to support our incredible TRIO ETS students in achieving their educational goals,” said Courtney Mai, manager, TRIO ETS. “All TRIO ETS staff members are the first in our families to complete a college degree, and so we know firsthand how beneficial it is to continue education beyond high school. It is an honor to get to know the students and to help them navigate the process.”

TRIO ETS participants receive advising, college application assistance, financial literacy workshops, tutoring, college campus tours, standardized test preparation, and scholarship assistance. A few of the most anticipated events include the Money Matters financial literacy event, the Summer Leadership Academy, and the out-of-town college visits. All services are free to program participants.
