Grant funds laying the foundation for workforce students to earn an associate degree at LSC-North Harris

During a luncheon on Tuesday, Oct. 12, nearly 30 students in the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) and Electrical Technology programs met with Johnson Controls representatives to learn how they can reach their goals without financial barriers thanks to a new $100,000 grant.

In addition to the scholarships, students learned how Johnson Controls’ support of their future will include mentoring, real-world experience, internship opportunities, and professional networking connections.

Workforce students at Lone Star College-North Harris are experiencing for themselves how a partnership with Johnson Controls is preparing them to learn in-demand skills and knowledge on their way to receiving an Associate of Applied Science degree.

“I was immediately able to buy my tools and the things that I would need, including tools that I don’t need for this semester, but it has set me up for future semesters,” said John Blasing, a first-semester student who received a scholarship for the fall. “It’s made it very easy and seamless to come to school and not worry about where the money is coming from.”

Through the partnership, LSC-North Harris and Johnson Controls are preparing the next wave of skilled workers to enter the Houston workforce.

“Networking is everything,” said Blasing. “The fact that LSC-North Harris is setting it up to where we are building connections while we are learning the trade is amazing.”
