Meet the Counselor.

Services Offered

Counseling services are available by appointment, except for emergencies. Counseling related services may be delivered in a variety of formats including short-term individual counseling, group counseling, consultation and crisis response, and mental health workshops.

Individual counseling sessions are generally 45 minutes in length.  Most students seeking individual counseling average three sessions per semester. We recognize that some students may require counseling support beyond our scope of services.  When appropriate, students needing intensive or specialized services will generally be referred to a community resource for additional support. Students referred to a community resource for appropriate mental health care are responsible for paying for all services received.

Scheduling an Appointments

Counselors are available to meet with students by appointment during normal business hours. However, students in crisis may be seen on a walk-in basis. Students seeking counseling services must schedule an initial intake appointment. Students may schedule an appointment in person (South 104) or by contacting the Counseling office at 713-351-3380. If the line is busy, please leave a message.  Voice messages will be returned within 48 hours.

Missed Appointments

Students are expected to cancel or reschedule counseling appointments least 24 hours in advance. If a student no shows for two appointments without contacting the Counseling office to reschedule in a timely manner, he/she will need approval prior to scheduling future meetings. This does not include students who are sick or experiencing extenuating circumstances.

Intake Appointments

The student’s initial appointment with a counselor will be an intake appointment. The intake appointment may take 30-minutes to 1-hour to complete. This session will give students an opportunity to share with a counselor his/her reasons for seeking counseling services. In addition, the counselor will gather background information about the student and discuss the Counseling office services and policies.

The counselor and the student will review the student’s intake form to determine which services is best suited to meet the student’s needs. Recommendations for services may include scheduling another counseling appointment, a referral to a campus resource for additional support, or a referral to a community resource when appropriate.

Please arrive 15-minutes early to your intake appointment to complete required forms.
