Types of Degrees & Certificates

Associate of Arts Degree (AA): an academic transfer degree designed for students who will ultimately be pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree at a four-year college/university that is not math or science oriented. Examples of this type of four-year degree are: Business, Liberal Arts, History, Speech, Music, Education, Criminal Justice, etc.

Associate of Science Degree (AS): an academic transfer degree designed for students who will ultimately be pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree at a four-year college/university. At LSC, the AS degree is a generalized degree that will not list a specific major but will be called Associate of Science. Some examples are Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, etc.

Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS): a two-year degree plan designed for students who want to pursue short-term training so they can enter the workforce immediately.

Associate of Arts in Teaching Degree (AAT): a two-year degree plan which satisfies the core requirements for baccalaureate programs at four-year institutions that lead to initial Texas teacher certification.

Certificate (CERT): a specialized credit program that trains students in a specific field. Some certificates can be stacked and their earned credits applied toward an associate degree.

Fast Track: industry training that results in a Lone Star College certificate. Credit hours are not earned with Fast Track programs, and rather are designed for quick industry education, without the need for core classes.

Individual Transfer Classes: guidelines for students who are enrolled at another college or university and want to take individual classes at LSC for Freshman and Sophomore (lower-division) level credits.
