Klein ISD Music Partnership

As part of a partnership between Lone Star College-University Park and Klein ISD, as of January 2023, Klein ISD high school music students are eligible to apply, audition, and enroll in classes that count toward the AA in Music degree and may be used toward a bachelor's degree in music at many institutions. Through this partnership, Klein ISD high school students can:

  • Learn from award-winning music faculty at Lone Star College-University Park
  • Perform among college-level musicians
  • Earn college credit that can be applied toward most associate and bachelor's degree music programs in Texas

Qualifications

To quality for this opportunity, students must be 16 years old and enrolled in their Klein ISD high school ensembles (choir, orchestra, band, etc.). Interested students must be admitted and audition (see below).  

Available Classes

While new courses will be added every year, the following courses are currently available:

Jazz Ensemble (MUEN 1127.6201)
Wednesdays, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
This is a full jazz band, including saxes, brass, rhythm section (piano, bass, drums, and guitar). Additional instruments (flute, clarinet, etc.) may also participate.

Symphony Orchestra (MUEN 1123.6201)
Mondays, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Full symphony orchestra, including orchestral strings, winds, brass, and percussion. Directed by Carlos Lara.

UP Chorale (MUEN 1141.6201)
Tuesdays, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
This Tuesday evening choral ensemble brings together students, faculty, staff, and community members to perform masterworks and vocal chamber music. 

Private Lessons (MUAP Courses)
Private lessons are available in voice, most instruments, and composition. Students must be enrolled in another music course (such as one of the above ensembles) to be eligible to take lessons.  

Location

All courses are taught at Lone Star College-University Park, located at 20515 State Hwy. 249, Houston, TX 77070. The campus is located near the intersection of 249 & Louetta and is less than 15 minutes away from all five Klein ISD high school campuses (6-14 minutes with low traffic, according to Google maps). 

Classes will be held in building 12 until the new Visual and Performing Arts building opens (slated for January 2024). Park in garage 11, enter through the front entrance of the campus (between building 12 and 13), and head to the right into building 12. (Campus Map)

Costs

Ensembles and private lessons are available for as little as $96 for the entire semester! Tuition and fees can vary over time, so visit this page for current cost estimates. As of January 2023, students can pay as little as:

  • $103 to perform with an ensemble
  • $103 for an entire semester of nonmajors' private lessons (weekly one-hour private lessons); that's only about $8 a lesson!
  • $206 for an entire semester of majors' private lessons lessons (weekly one-hour private lessons and weekly studio classes, or group lessons)
