September 15 to October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month - a celebration of Hispanic and Latino history and culture and its many contributions to the United States. Lone Star College-CyFair is proud to host many events commemorating the significance of this month.

Hispanic Heritage Month Opening Ceremony

Mexican American Studies and the Houston Latino Film Festival Present: "American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez"

The event will consist of screening the documentary “American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez.” After the film ends, a panel will answer questions related to content covered in the film, the historical importance, and their experience with this new partnership between LSC and the Houston Latino Film Festival. Viva la Vida at Lone Star College-CyFair is LASO’s signature celebration of Latin American identity and pride, held in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. This year, the event will highlight the vibrant cultures of Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, El Salvador, and Cuba, bringing their traditions to life through music, food, and storytelling. By showcasing these five countries, LASO seeks to capture the true essence of Latino culture, its diversity, resilience, and joy. More than just a celebration, Viva la Vida is a living representation of what it means to embrace heritage, creating a space where students can connect with their roots while others learn, appreciate, and join in the richness of the Latino experience.

A Conversation with Dr. Cynthia E. Orozco: LULAC, Civil Rights, and the Mexican American Experience

Latin Night: Una Noche Bajo Las Estrellas is LASO’s signature event celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and honoring the diverse cultures, traditions, and identities that make up the Hispanic and Latino community. Through live music, dance, food, and community engagement, this event provides students with an opportunity to celebrate the richness of Latin American heritage while fostering cultural pride, connection, and belonging on campus.

As the culminating celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Latin Night brings students together through some of the most recognizable and unifying aspects of Latin

American culture: music, dance, and cuisine. The evening will feature live Latin music followed by a vibrant dance celebration showcasing musical styles and infl uences from across Latin America. Traditional foods and refreshments will further enhance the experience by allowing attendees to explore and appreciate the fl avors that play a meaningful role in many Hispanic cultures. By creating a welcoming space where students can dance, socialize, and engage with diff erent cultural traditions, LASO encourages cultural appreciation and cross-cultural understanding among members of the college community.

In addition to the celebration, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in “Deja Tu Huella Latina,” an interactive community mural that invites students to reflect on and share what they value most about being Latino or what they admire most about Hispanic and Latino cultures. This activity provides a meaningful space for personal expression while highlighting the diverse experiences, traditions, and perspectives that strengthen our community. The completed mural will serve as a visual representation of the pride, heritage, and unity celebrated throughout Hispanic Heritage Month.
