ALL at LSC-North Harris announces April 2014 events

Come and meet other members of the community by joining the Lone Star College-North Harris Academy for Lifelong Learning (ALL). The ALL program offers more than 100 classes each year, ranging from technology to watercolor art.

The Academy for Lifelong Learning is a membership community that offers free and low-cost classes, events and activities for adults age 50 and better.Membership costs $20 per academic calendar year and allows members to register for any ALL class offered at LSC-North Harris. Some courses may require an additional material, workbook or entry fee.

In addition to the classes, there are monthly lunch and learns, movie matinees, and day trips throughout the Houston area.

Upcoming classes and events include:

The Battle of the Alamo, April 8 from 10 a.m. to noon

Thomas Green, popular Texas historian, will present little known facts about the battle of the Alamo. Green will discuss the prominent heroes of the Alamo: Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, Colonel Travis and many of the defenders.

“Life After Work” or Retirement Ideas for Financial Security, April 18 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Come learn from Gary Alden how to create a sustainable income stream in retirement.

Let’s Talk About Orchids, April 25 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Bruce Cameron is the master grower of orchids in our area. Bring your orchid to class! Learn how to care for them---fertilizing, watering, lighting and how to repot them.

Birding ID/Walk, April 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Jesse Jones Park

With a few key essential characteristics you can begin to identify birds or their families. Beaks, tails, colors, behavior – all are important. Come learn the basics from Terri MacArthur, so you can begin to enjoy bird identification right away.

Street Defenses for the Elderly, April 30 from 4 to 5 p.m.

R.W. Mahoney will discuss what can be done to protect yourself against armed and unarmed assailants. Learn how to defend yourself against street attacks.
